b. 1731, s. Thomas and Rebekah Evans, of Evesham, N.J.
1745, apprenticed to a bricklayer.
1752, had pleurisy in Phila. Taken to home of John and Elizabeth Collins.
m., 1753, Priscilla Collins, and went to Mt. Holly, N.J., and worked as a mason. Removed to a house near John Woolman’s.
1757, settled on south side of Cooper’s Creek, Gloucester Co., within limits of Haddonfield Mo. Mtg.
1756, refused to go as a soldier; had goods requisitioned.
Abstained from all intoxicating liquors. Offered 6d. a day more to harvest labourers with the understanding that no liquors would be provided. He himself partook of no tea, coffee, sugar or molasses. 1762, adopted use of undyed clothing. Wore a beard.
1761, purchased a farm in Newton township.
For 13 or 14 years his meeting did not release him to travel in the ministry on account of his peculiarities, but in 1794, he was set at liberty to visit New Eng. and Canada with a minute of unity. 1797, returned after a 14-months’ absence in Carolina, Ga., Va., N. Y. and Pa. 1798, ret from visiting Va. and Pa. 1796, had a prospect of going to Eng., but his meeting not concurring, he felt released.

With John Hunt of Moorestown, N. J., often visited Indians, near Indian Mills, N. J., taking blankets and supplies.
