Scope and Contents

Records of Cedar Creek and Richmond Monthly Meetings and their predecessors, 1729-1999. Includes Men's and Joint minutes 1739-1974, Women's minutes 1754-1890, vital records, 1729-1916, Worship and Ministry and its predecessors 1791-1949, and financial records 1875-1917. Also includes Richmond Preparative Meeting Minutes, 1815-1818, Camp Creek Monthly Meeting records, 1747-1753, and Cedar Creek Preparative Meeting Minutes 1790-1792.

Biographical / Historical

In 1735, Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting was established from Henrico-Curles Monthly Meeting. The Cedar Creek Particular Meeting in Hanover County and the Particular Meeting in Caroline County were united to form Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting. This Monthly Meeting would later include meetings in Albemarle, Amelia, Bedford, Campbell, Caroline, Charles City, Goochland, Genito, Halifax, Hanover, Henrico, Louisa, New Kent, and Orange counties. Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting introduced the first minute, in May 1767, leading to the abolition of slavery in the Virginia Meetings.

An indulged meeting for worship was held for Friends in Richmond as early as 1795 under the care of White Oak Swamp. By 1815 it was granted the status of a Preparative Meeting.

Friends in Richmond joined to Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting in 1841 when White Oak Swamp Meeting, at this time called Wayne Oak, was laid down. Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting began meeting in Richmond in 1854, Friends officially changed the name to Richmond Monthly Meeting in 1875.
