Biographical / Historical

Nottingham Monthly Meeting began as a meeting for worship in 1709. It was established as a preparative meeting in 1715 under Newark (Kennett) Monthly Meeting; in 1718 it was placed under the care of New Garden Monthly Meeting. Nottingham Monthly Meeting was set off from New Garden in 1730, and until 1758 was known informally as East Nottingham Monthly Meeting. In 1819, Nottingham became part of a new quarterly meeting under the jurisdiction of Baltimore Yearly Meeting. At the time of the Separation in 1828, there were two Nottingham Monthly Meetings. Nottingham (Orthodox) changed its name in 1829 to Nottingham and Little Britain. Orthodox Quakers at Nottingham withdrew from Baltimore Yearly Meeting in 1854; they affiliated with the Primitive branch of Friends, but this meeting was laid down in 1890, its membership joined to Primitive Friends in Philadelphia.

The successor to Nottingham Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) is currently active. The Meeting is sometimes referred to as Oxford.
