Zoologist, paleontologist.
b. 28 July 1840, Phila., Pa., s. Alfred and Hanna (Edge) Cope.
1853, Westtown School. Univ. of Penna. 1859, at Wash., D. C., studied at Smithsonian Insititution. 18 studied in Europe.
m., 1865, Annie Pim. One daughter.
1864-1867, professor at Haverford College, Pa. Resigned on account of ill health.
1884, curator of National Museum, Wash., D. C.
1891, professor of Geology at th Univ. of Pa., Phila.
1896, President of the American Assoc. for the Ad went of Science.
Discovered and described over 1000 species of fos vertebrates. Became rival of O. C. Marsh.
Work criticized as sometimes superficial, yet of astonishing amount. Published papers having 600 separate titles.
App author of "The conversions of early Friends," appearing Friends Review, 29(1876):385, 411, W9.
d. 12 April, 1897, in his 57th year.
